Several times we have driven through the state of Oregon
on Interstate 5 highway
without visiting the Historical town of Oakland.
Oakland was founded in 1851 by Dr. Dorsey Baker.
The railroad came to town in 1872. After several fires, permanent
brick buildings replaced wooden structures.
The economy was mainly agricultural.
City park displays old farm equipment.
Stately homes dot the community.
Quaint soda fountain, restaurant and
bar attracts tourists.
Water wheel powered a grist mill
which ground grain into flour.
The wheel was originally shipped by boat from
the east coast around Cape Horn, South America.
We assume this sign was posted by a frustrated private homeowner.
