Santa Fe, New Mexico

Hispanic Culture thrives in Santa Fe, NM.

Old town has several of the oldest buildings in America.

The City of Santa Fe is the oldest capital in the United States.

Spanish explorers established their Provincial capital in 1610.

De Vargas Street House is one of the oldest buildings in America.

The foundation was built by ancient Indian Pueblo dating around 1200.

Today the house is a museum with a gift shop.

San Miguel Church is the oldest Church structure in USA. Original adobe walls and alter were built by Tlaxcalan Indians from Mexico about 1610.

The chapel's high windows and thick walls provided
a fortress against Indian attacks.

The Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi was built in 1869.

Reminiscent of Romanesque cathedrals in France.

Many shops, boutiques, art galleries and outdoor vendors attract the tourists.

A popular tourist attraction is the Loretto Chapel built in 1873.

Inside the small chapel is a spiral staircase which seems to defy gravity as it makes two complete 360 degree turns with no central support.

 Originally built with no handrails.

A mystery surrounds the unknown old carpenter who vanished after
building the staircase. He used hardwood not native to the area.

The Palace of the Governors located on one side of the Santa Fe Plaza. The building was built 1612 and housed governments under Spanish, Mexican and American Rule.  It is the oldest public building in the United States.

Talented Native American artists sell their jewelry inside the building walkway.

The building is a museum with preserved  Mexican Governor's office.

Busy Plaza with flowers and music.

Surrounding the Plaza are colorful vendor outdoor shops.
