In 1584, at the request of Queen Elizabeth, Sir Walter Raleigh

In 1587 three ships carrying 117 settlers landed at
Roanoke Island to establish a colony. The voyage took 8 weeks.
The Colonists built a Earthen Fort and homes near
what is today the town of Manteo.
Young families were recruited for the promise of 500 acres of land.
The settlers exhausted their food supplies in the first year.
The Governor of the Colony
returned to England for supplies and more assistance.
The War between England and Spain prevented the
Governor from returning for 3 years.
Settlers promised the Governor they would leave a message if
they left Roanoke Island.
When the Governor returned he found the word
"Croatoan" on a post. This indicated the group
might have gone to Hatteras Island on the Outer Banks.
A search did not locate any members of the Colony or
their remains. The homes had disappeared.
Archeological digs have only recovered
a few metal tools and nails. Never found
the group on the Outer Banks.
The fate of the Lost Colony is still a mystery.
I used to imagine Heaven with a large data bank to answer all the unsolved questions from Earth--like Did Anastasia survive? or this one presented in your blog. Larry and I visited many years ago...a beautiful area!
