Tybee Island, Georgia

Tybee Island is the northern most Island of the 

Georgia's Barrier Islands and located east of Savannah.

The little spit of land occupies only 2.6 square miles.

The place was a haven for pirates in 1800's.

The fresh shrimp at Coco's is caught daily.

Shrimp boats moored behind the restaurant provide the fresh seafood.

Tybee Lighthouse was built in 1732 and has provided safe entrance into 

the Savannah River for over 270 years.

Fort Screven was built in about 1875 to provide coastal artillery protection during the Spanish American War and both World Wars.

The Cockspur Beacon marks the South Channel 

of the Savannah River.

this shipping channel.

Fort Pulaski is an impressive brick fort located on Cockspur Island 

in the mouth of the Savannah River.

It was originally a Confederate Fortress built in 1829.

The brick fort took over 18 years to build and

 30 hours to destroy by Union Forces during the Civil War.

The quick fall of Fort Pulaski was the result of new

technology in warfare. Rifled (spiral grooves) cannon barrels 
replaced smooth bore cannons. 

A cannon ball still lodged in the wall.

The fort has a moat and a drawbridge.

Rifled barrel cannon shot was able to destroy the

fort's walls from a mile away.
