Theodore Roosevelt National Park contains over 70,000 acres. There is a 36 mile scenic loop drive in the South Unit.
North Dakota's rugged badlands inspired Roosevelt to protect this beautiful land by making it a National Park. As President he established the US Forest Service and later proclaimed 18 national monuments
due to his interest in nature and conservation.
The red color is called scoria which is a natural brick formed by a
wildfire baking sand and clay.
The prairie dog like the bison was a once a major part of the
Great Plains Wildlife. The black tail prairie dog only lives in this park.
Okay... what do these bike riders do now? This bison bull weighs over 2,000 pounds and measures 6 feet shoulder to shoulder. Also note the huge 2 foot horns that are used for fighting. The big guy can also run 30 mph.
This couple is safe...... we waved to them later.
There are about 300 bison in the south unit of the park.
We saw two separate herds.
We could hear him breathing.....
Mom is leading her new calf to dinner....
