Toledo, Oregon

Port of Toledo Wooden Boat Show including the Northwest Steam Society

Toledo is 7 miles inland from Newport and supports a saw mill.

The 14th annual event to observe the use of steam to power boats and automobiles.

Each wooden boat has a unique story to tell.

Early Stanley Steamer used steam to power this vehicle,
built between 1902-1924 in Massachusetts.

Free boat rides of your choice.

Local couple demonstrate the use of a canon powered by air pressure.

Children were shown how to load the canon with a potato and fire it across the water.
Each child received a special prize.

Highlight of the day was the Containerboard Boat Race.
All boats had to be made out of cardboard and awards were given to
the most spectacular sinking.

Decorated boats ready for launch.  Race drivers dressed  in costume.

Number 33 sunk just after launch.

Good sinking might have won the prize but.....

Each racer had to swim back to the starting point with boat.

Fresh crab and fish for sale right off the boats.

Heading to downtown along the dockside boardwalk.

Commercial and private boats sell their catch to local processing plants.

Background view of the Yaquina Bay historical arch bridge built in 1936.

Many stores selling unusual items to tourists.

The sea lions are a big attraction. Visitors watch them bark & fight to get sunbathing space.

The little guys are not permitted on the docks.  Confrontations cause noise day and night.

Charter boats returned with fish and crab.

Moe's Restaurant opened in 1946  and added this annex later on the water.

This tavern sign tells it all.  Sign inside says "same day service on most orders"

Oregon Coast

Winchester Bay south of Reedsport
is our first stop in Oregon.

Good fish lunch at Moe's on the water in Florence, Oregon

Downtown Florence has a scenic waterfront with shops and restaurants.

Nice walk along the boardwalk.

Oregon Coast has several historical bridges.

Back at our campground in Winchester, we have a view of the bay from this hill.

The campground has a couple of cabins for rent for about $90/night.

Across the street are more campgrounds for sand dune riders.

One inlet has boat moorage.

The inlets provide dry camping which means no electricity, water or sewer.

Fisherman returning up the river to dock.

Waiting in line to go home.

Saturday fishing at the pier.
